Broadcasting and Writing
A producer, writer and trusted interviewer in radio and television, Maggie began her broadcasting career as a news anchor and cultural interviewer for Arab TV. She has since created and presented radio documentaries and film packages for a variety of outlets and clients, including the Irish broadcaster RTE, the New Economics Foundation, Cisco Systems, The Boots Group and British Airways. As a writer and journalist, she has contributed to UK and international publications including The Independent on Sunday, the Times Educational Supplement, openDemocracy, CNBC’s European Business, and Caribbean Beat.
With wide-ranging interests in the arts, cultural affairs and business, Maggie interviews musicians, artists and writers through to academics, scientists and business leaders. She brings a rounded and insightful perspective to documentary-making and is best known for her thoughtful, in-depth profiles of creative artists and entrepreneurs. Memorable encounters include discussing stereoscopic photography and astronomy with Brian May, founder of Queen; talking to Annie Lennox about her pioneering work as a women’s rights activist; being taught to fly by singer Bruce Dickinson, frontman of Iron Maiden; meeting Johnnie Boden, pioneer of upmarket catalogue clothing; discussing the merits of salmon farming and music copyright with Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull; and quizzing jewellery retailer Gerald Ratner on his fall and redemption.
Business Career and Move into Broadcasting
Rarely taking the expected path, Maggie graduated with a degree in Philosophy from the University of Hull. Before moving into broadcasting, she worked as an executive in the commercial sector and was headhunted by Pearson Television (PTV) – then the world’s largest independent producer and distributor – to work for Greg Dyke. Today the company continues as FremantleMedia, making scores of popular programmes ranging from The Apprentice to Britain’s Got Talent. Her time with Pearson opened the path into television presenting, journalism and radio.
A former Trustee of Arts Educational Schools and University Governor, Maggie was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the University of Westminster in 2014 for services to education. With extensive experience across business, strategic communications and venture capital, she brings insight and sound judgement to company boards as a non-executive director and independent adviser. Attuned to working across cultures, she has first-hand experience of the complex organisational challenges companies face and a clear understanding of how the media can be used strategically. Of mixed heritage, Maggie spent part of her childhood in Trinidad, an experience that continues to inform her international outlook.
